Hempcrete

Also known as ‘hemp-lime’. Hempcrete is a building substance made of low impact materials used for architectural and construction projects. UK-grown hemp shiv and a lime binder are wet-mixed on site to create Hempcrete. The binding method used to create Hempcrete makes it easy to eliminate thermal bridging and optimises air-tightness in buildings

Cast-on-site Hempcrete allows a simple design and optimum thermal efficiency. The construction industry is responsible for roughly 60% of the UK’s total carbon emissions; Hempcrete is a “better-than-zero-carbon material” and locks away more carbon during the lifetime of the building, than was used in its production and use.

Hempcrete walls have a much better thermal performance than conventional or lightweight insulation constructions, meaning that the energy used by the occupants of the building is dramatically reduced.

Material Make hemp shiv and lime binder
Applications Walls, construction, architecture
Sustainability Level The thermal performance of hempcrete means that the interior of hempcrete buildings remains at a near constant temperature with little demand on heating or cooling systems. Hempcrete homes are healthy to live in, and help to reduce the financial impact of fuel bits on their occupants.
