The brass industry depends on the recycling of brass scrap for its survival. Brass producers in the United Kingdom use virtually entirely waste brass.

In fact, making brass from new copper and zinc would be uneconomical and wasteful of raw materials, thus brass is considered to be super sustainable since new brass items are created from recycled scrap.

Another alternative view on the sustainable nature of Brass materials includes a social aspect. Pathogens that can be spread by touch, tend to die within a few hours on brass surfaces. This does not happen on stainless steel or plastic. As a result, brass materials are being evaluated in hospitals featuring high-touch applications such as doorknobs, grab rails, surfaces, etc.
